Studia medyczne na Wolnym Uniwersytecie w Berlinie oraz na Uniwersytecie Albrechta i Ludwika we Fryburgu ukończył w 1974 r W 1978 r. rozpoczął karierę zawodową jako rezydent na Uniwersytecie Albrechta i Ludwika we Fryburgu na oddziale chirurgii, zajmował się chirurgią przeszczepów, uczestnicząc w początkowo niewielkim programie transplantacyjnym, który obejmował przeszczepienie 20 nerek rocznie. Program chirurgii transplantacyjnej został rozwinięty i ostatecznie obejmował rocznie: 120 przeszczepów nerek, 30 przeszczepów wątroby i około 15 trzustki. Bardzo ważnym projektem było porozumienie partnerskie z Uniwersytetem Medycznym we Wrocławiu oraz program transplantacyjny prowadzony przez prof. Dariusza Patrzałka. Program pomógł wielu pacjentom we Fryburgu i Wrocławiu, był postrzegany przez międzynarodowych ekspertów w tej dziedzinie jako przełomowe wydarzenie we współpracy między specjalistami. Zajmując się głównie chirurgią transplantacyjną, profesor poszerzał swoją edukację z chirurgii ogólnej i traumatologii. Zainteresowanie profesora skupiało się na dawstwie nerek od żywych osób. Wykonał pierwszy w Europie przeszczep krzyżowy oraz pierwszy w Niemczech przeszczep nerki od żywego dawcy z niekompatybilną grupą krwi. W 2004 r. objął stanowisko dyrektora medycznego Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation. (Polish) Description in another language: Günter Kirste was born on January 19, 1948. In 1974 he graduated at the Freie Universitӓt Berlin and Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. In 1978 started his career as resident at the Albert-Ludwig University in Freiburg, Department of Surgery, where he was involved in the field of transplant surgery in a very small transplant program operating about 20 kidneys a year. The program was further developed and involved 120 kidneys a year, 30 livers a year, and about 15 pancreata per year. A very important project developed at that time was a partnership agreement with Wroclaw Medical University and the transplantation program led by professor Dariusz Patrzałek. This program helped a number of patients in Freiburg and Wroclaw. It was regarded by a number of international experts in the field as a milestone in developing expert cooperation. Being engaged in transplant surgery, he broaden his education in general surgery and in traumatology.His special interest involved doing the first cross-over transplant in Europe and performing the first ABO-incompatible living kidney transplantation in Germany. In 2004, he took over the position as medical director of the Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation. (English)
